West Point graduate and Army veteran Ahner laid flowers at the Four Chaplains Memorial, recently erected to the memory of four chaplains who perished on the Dorchester, an American troop transport ship, torpedoed by a German submarine in 1943.
Ahner praised the bravery and dedication of the United States military, recognizing the sacrifice and sense of duty on the part of the troops serving in Iraq. He also remembered his grandfather who fought in the Aleutian Campaign during WW II.
“I want to salute the men and women who gave so much during World War II—men like former Kansas senator Bob Dole, who, along with my grandfather, are true American heroes,” said Ahner. He continued, “Sixty-two years ago today, unbelievably brave men led by fellow Kansan and West Point graduate General Dwight Eisenhower, stormed the beaches of Normandy breaking the Nazi hold on western Europe. We need to pause each June 6th in memory of their contribution to the freedom and democracy we enjoy today.”
